INTEGRATED CNC ENCLOSURE
If you purchased one of those $500,000.00 production milling machines
you would expect to have the CNC system fully integrated into the
machine structure, but in a combination machine it was unheard of-
until now. The PATRIOT machine has the CNC control enclosure
factory built and integrated into the machine design. Over the
past 20 years thousands of our machines have been fitted
with CNC systems. Many were purchased from us and many more were
built by owners themselves. Ironically, people have reported to
us that the most difficult part of building the CNC system is making
the box to put everything into. Many of those retrofit systems
end up as a box or 2 sitting on your bench with cables strung
everywhere connecting to motors and a computer resembling one of those
labs in a cheap horror movie. Some systems even ended up just being
screwed on a plank of wood- open to chips and all sorts of
contamination. For the PATRIOT machine, we wanted it to be a clean
package with no cables strung around to trip over or get caught in the
machine parts. We also wanted the cable inputs and outputs to be
industry standard so that our DIY customers could source their pieces
from stores like Radio Shack. Working with our CNC supplier, we
designed our enclosure to have openings factory cut for standard Molex,
RS 232 and computer power supply cables. We also built in
the openings for 2 computer cooling fans which keep the interior cool
and pressurized to keep out dust and dirt. The box itself is made
as part of the overall design of our machine so it has a professional
look. If you order CNC with your machine, all the electronics are
installed by us prior to shipment. If you order later, simply
return the box to us for installation of the CNC system. For the
do-it yourself builder, the box is made in 2 parts, so you can lay out
your components on the " breadboard" section, and when all attached and
tested, bolt the top cover in place. All holes are factory
drilled and tapped and fasteners are included.
