R-8 MILL SPINDLE
As our machine horsepower increased over the
years and we created the really stable mill head design, we realized
that the old Morse #3 spindle simply could no longer handle the cutting
forces generated in milling. The next logical step was to go to
the R-8 spindle used by big machines like the Bridgeport style.
We had experience with some other import machines using R-8 spindles
and found that many of them used a small round press-in style of key to
hold the R-8 tooling. End users found that this undersized
pin could shear off under heavy loads. Our solution was to design
a replaceable key that fit a full 1.125" along the keyway of the R-8
tooling. Combined with our 1.5 horsepower motors and huge tapered
roller bearings, the mill has all the cutting power you will
need. As an added bonus, if the key should ever become worn or
damaged, it can be replaced for a few dollars, instead of replacing the
entire spindle.
